Gram’s Grape “Jell-ous” {Fruit Sweetened, Vegan, Plant Based, Paleo, AIP}
Growing up, my Gram’s always made her special jello. Gatherings, birthdays, holidays, you name it, that jello would always be there and it was my most favorite thing on the table. Sometimes it was green, other times purple or red, but it was always thick and extra fruity instead of that jiggly clear stuff you normally see, if it wasn’t so filling I could probably eat a whole bowl, seriously. A couple of years ago I asked my Gram’s what made her jello so delicious and she told me her secret was adding a banana and a can of fruit cocktail or pears. Wanting to recreate a healthier version of this jello for my kids, I set out on a mission to make it without using the box stuff, added sugars or fruit from a can. Luckily, it turned out pretty spot on my first try! And it’s such a simple recipe it whips up in minutes, perfect for these warm summer months coming up. After I made my first batch Ev’s saw me putting it in the fridge, she asked me what it was and misunderstood me and started calling it “jell-ous”, I’ve corrected her since, but it was so cute the name just stuck! I’ve made a grape version here, but I’ve also tried it with pomegranate and that was equally delicious…really you could use any juice or combination of juices you prefer. My Gram’s always served hers with Cool Whip and I find that So Delicious Cocowhip gives it that nostalgic taste while keeping it dairy free (although it does contain added sugar).
How many bowls of “jell-ous” you guys want?…hmm, looks like maybe 15.
^That look Stormy is giving Ev’s!🤣
^Post “jell-ous” spoon tricks, they thought this was pretty awesome and wanted to make sure I got a picture!
Success! They loved it! Now I just have to decide which flavor to try next! Love you Gram’s! Thank you for sharing your delicious jello!❤
Gram's Grape "Jell-ous" {Fruit Sweetened, Vegan, Plant Based, Paleo, AIP}
Notes
*Equally delicious with 100% Pomegranate Juice!
**We used So Delicious because we're all addicted to it over here, and it really adds to that nostalgic feel, but any whip you prefer would be great! In order to keep it AIP compliant use coconut whip cream, made by chilling two cans of full fat coconut milk overnight, scooping off the solid cream, and whip until fluffy -add any flavoring and sweeteners such as vanilla and maple syrup as preferred.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup 100% Concord Grape Juice* (preferably organic, such as Lakewood Organic or R.W. Knudson)
- 3 Tbsp Agar Agar Flakes
- 1 Medium spotted banana, peeled and broken into chunks
- 2 Bartlett pears, sliced and cored
Instructions
- Prepare 4-6 serving glasses(depending on the size, I used 4), set aside.
- Place grape juice and agar agar flakes in medium saucepan.
- Whisk over medium/low heat until all agar agar flakes have dissolved, about 5-10 minutes.
- Place peeled banana and pear slices into a blender and blend until no chunks remain.
- Once agar agar flakes have dissolved, pour banana mixture into saucepan with grape juice mixture, whisk until fully incorporated.
- Pour into serving glasses and chill until firm, about 4 hours or overnight.
- Serve with whipping cream**
